Lemurs

We have four species of lemur at Bristol Zoo Project; Alaotran gentle, black-and-white ruffed, blue-eyed black and ring-tailed.

Fun Fact

Ring-tailed lemurs use the scent glands on their wrists and chest to mark their territory. Males also use their tails to waft the smell towards their rivals!

Conservation

Madagascar is one of the places where lemurs are naturally found in the wild. Despite being a biodiversity hotspot, the island’s species are threatened by high levels of habitat loss due to a rapidly growing human population.

Lemurs are the most endangered group of mammals in the world, and some species, including the blue-eyed black lemur, are classified by the IUCN as Critically Endangered.
